![]() ![]() It's a combination of evolution and fine-tuning across software and hardware, all the while ensuring that games remain the core offering. While the Xbox Series X (and the Xbox Series S for that matter) is delivering iteration on an established formula, the PS5 is a true change for PlayStation gaming. The PS5 represents quite a shift for the PlayStation identity in many ways, particularly when it comes to design aesthetics and messaging. The word that is defining the next generation of PlayStation consoles is change. With highly-anticipated upcoming PS5 games like God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon: Forbidden West on the way in 2022, that's only going to get better from here. Sony's latest console is a brilliant machine with equally high-end games to match its specs. Thankfully, the wait and the mission are worth it. It's getting better, but it's still many miles away from a 'Click to add to basket' job. Global semiconductor shortages, online waiting lines, 3am stock drops, and a dramatic surge in scalpers has turned a simple purchase into an epic quest. In the 12 months since launch, and the months preceding that too, trying to find any news on PS5 restock updates has been problematic. Even the addition of the DualSense's internal mic has been a surprise benefit for impromptu multiplayer sessions.īut all of that does come with one large caveat - owning a PS5. So many games - both first- and third-party - have made great use of the DualSense's capabilities, such as the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, that when a game doesn't cash in on them it feels broken. Still crowning Sony's design decisions though a year on is the PS5 controller, the DualSense. Other notable tweaks included adding support for Sony's 3D Audio to your TV, and smaller updates like the option to hide the pesky 'screenshot taken' prompt that ruined many a magic moment. The best PS5 SSDs might be pricey, but they're a great way to expand the pretty limited 825GB internal storage available with the PS5. ![]() Other updates have also added much-needed new features, like the support for adding a second internal M.2 SSD for storing more PS5 games on the machine itself. An update has since fixed the issue, clearly demarcating which version of a game you have installed, but for many months people were getting the PS4 version of their cross-gen game bundles delivered without even realizing it. But, more importantly, the UI did an incredible job itself at messing up how it delivered people's digital games. ![]() I still can't get my head around the fact the PlayStation button on the controller works in the opposite way to how the PS4 does, and even after a year of fumbling, I don't think I ever will. So it's been a year that's been centered on the software on both sides then, although the PS5 UI hasn't been without its issues. ![]()
